Ao serem liberados para a atmosfera, especialmente na queima de carvão mineral, o dióxido de enxofre (SO2) e o dióxido de nitrogênio (NO2) reagem com o vapor de água, formando o ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) e o ácido nítrico (HNO3), respectivamente.
Causas
A chuva com teor ácido costuma ocorrer em áreas de grande concentração populacional, indústrias e com altos níveis de emissão de poluentes, como o CO2 e o metano.
Consequências
Quando ocorre precipitação em forma de chuva ácida, há prejuízo para o solo, as plantações, as florestas, as águas de lagos e rios, além da corrosão de edifícios e monumentos históricos, entre outros.
